Build Your Business by Choice, Not by Chance

At the core,  true success is all about designing your business (and your life) by choice, not by chance.

When you build your business by choice instead of chance, chaos naturally dissipates.  When you build your business with intention, you are able to moldBusinesschance it and shape it to fit who you are and the life that you want to live.  When you build your business by choice, you have a plan—you are focused.

When you build your business by chance, your energy is scattered and things seem overwhelming. It’s easy to lose yourself, your goals, and your dreams when you allow chance to run the show.

Are you building your business by choice or by chance?

  • Is your business built around your Genius, Interests, Fire, Talents, and Strengths (GIFTS), or did you model it after what everyone else is doing?
  • Have you decided who it is you are meant to serve with your GIFTS, or are you leaving it to chance that your ideal clients will somehow find you?
  • Do you create products and services based on your ideal client’s needs or do you think, “If I build it, they will come?”
  • Do you actively spread your message, or do you hope someone will stumble upon your website?
  • Do you choose to “ask for the business” and enroll new clients, or do you simply hope they will ask you about your services?
  • Do you charge based on the value you provide or do you spend your time wishing your clients would pay you more?
  • Do you package your services for consistent income and consistent client results, or do you just hope your clients will stick around long enough for both?
  • Do you  have systems in your business, or do you cross your fingers that everything will go smoothly?
  • Do you plan your day according to your goals, or do you wait for others to set your agenda for you?
  • Have you stopped to consider what you want your business to look like, or did you just “hang your shingle.”
  • Have you stopped to consider what you want your life to look like, or do you just go through the motions?
  • Have you considered how your business and personal life fuse together, or  are you hoping that someday they will both support each other?
  • Do you let circumstances dictate your success, or do you choose to succeed–no matter what?

I would love to hear how you have built (or will build) your business by choice.  Please feel free to leave your comments below.

Feedback & Comments:

  1. What I really like about your post, Tiffany, is that you make it clear that our performance in our businesses is a choice! Love that. Action gets results. Inaction and doubt don’t. Your checklist is great!!

  2. It’s so important to make choices in building your business because if you leave it to chance you can’t recreate any success you achieve.

  3. Great post, I was just talking with colleagues about this earlier this week. It’s so important to sit down and refocus every now and again. This list is a good place to start.

  4. What great questions to be asking yourself! being proactive and making choices is the way to go!

  5. Great post. It’s ALL about a strong, consistent marketing message and plan to support your big VISION. I often tell clients “A funny thing happens when you don’t market…nothing”.

  6. Just grabbing onto a few of your questions and answering them honestly would help many start ups and small business owners. This group will often consider themselves very busy. In reality, it is ‘busy’ work they are busy with not action oriented productive work.
